I gave this one two stars since they actually do save you 45 pennies in the end, but the MSRP on the iRobot site is 39.99 (+ $9.95 shipping), NOT 59.99.

So, what they did was have the item with "free" super saver shipping, after raising the price $20, then giving a "discount" of $10.50, which means your actual savings is .125%, not "18%".

Normally I'd save the $.45, but this was so sneaky, that I will be giving the manufacturer my business.

We've been using 2 Roombas, intensively for more than a couple of years and, finally, it came to the point where we thought we wanted some replacement filters, mainly because the existing ones began to look a bit worn out.

Three extra filters... 2 of them are unlikely to be used because you are may replace your Roomba before they get a chance to perform. They are so well-made, they hardly ever break or degrade. My advice: try to find a combo pack that includes one filter because 3 filters is probably 2 too many. If you have 2 Roombas, like we do, then purchasing this pack does make sense.

Note: I'm not aware of such a combo pack which is why I am taking one star away - the Roomba makers seem to be forcing us to buy more than we need in this instance.

Roomba owners know that a fresh filter captures more dust than an old one. If you haven't changed your filter in a while, you are really hampering the cleaning potential of your little robot helper. This is a good price and certainly much better than buying from irobot directly. I make my filters last much longer by taking them outside and using canned air to blast them "clean". It only takes about 5 seconds and makes them almost as good as new. I do this about 4 times (once a month) before I finally replace them.

These are worth having if your Roomba did not come with then or not with enough of them.

When set as a virtual wall, it will not allow Roomba to enter certain areas such as the bathroom.

When in Lighthouse mode, Roomba will pass through into another room and, after done with cleaning there, it will guide it back to the charging station.

Depending on how wide the passages you need to protect/signal, it can be set to 0-3ft., 4-7ft. or 8+ft.

It requires 2 C-cell batteries.

It seems to be 100% effective as a virtual wall when placed properly and close to 100% effective as a lighthouse.

The Virtual Wall Lighthouse is amazing, turning on and off with the Roomba 500 series via RF. I use a network of 5 of these to keep my Roomba out of the bathroom and to let it know which rooms are which.

Definitely get these over the plain old manually-activated virtual walls. You'll forget to turn them off and they eat batteries. Also, the lighthouse works with rechargeable batteries and the manual ones don't.

It doesn't work as well as the menu says with in terms of automation.
1. The cleaning path is so random that some areas are repeated many times while some areas are not covered. The menu says it calculate its own efficient path, but it seems to me that it is randomly bounces against any object.

2. It is supposed to come back to the home base when it is done its cleaning cycle or battery runs low. Well, it cleans my room for a lot longer than 25 minutes(factory estimate) until it runs out of battery and dies without coming back to home base. Next time, I have to press on "dock" button hope it comes back to home base.

3. Even with two light houses placed at between rooms as instructed by the menu, the robot doesn't know how to come back to home base. I finally press "dock" button, but still I have to do a lot of interference to force it back to base.

It does do a good job on cleaning dirt and hair.

Bought one for my wife for Mother's Day. I used it more than she did. This thing worked great for about 2-3 months. After that, the batteries gained a memory and wouldn't work longer than 30 minutes. 3 months after that...one of the gears in the wheel broke and then all it would do is go circles. I threw the $400 thing in the trash and swore I'd never buy one again.

First let me say that I agree with people who say that the robot does a competent job of cleaning. You should SEE the dust bin after vacuuming! I am also in awe etc etc, but I'm going to try to focus on things that others have not mentioned.

My 550 (560 actually, I think...it came with a few more odds and ends in the box) is actually my second Roomba. The first was the Discovery SE, one of the 400 series. The 400 was pretty good with two exceptions: 1) It would not work on rug fringe. It gets hopelessly tangled in less time that it takes to say "Wait!" The second problem with the older 400 series is that the battery dies fairly quickly if you do not use it VERY frequently. I use it once/week and by second battery is showing its age.

In any case, the 500 series is advertised to be able to deal with rug fringe, and indeed it does so reasonably well. It is also supposed to be able to do 4 rooms using these "lighthouses" that have been previously mentioned. To summarize, these are little gadgets that put out an IR (UV?) beam that the robot can see; it generally will not cross the beam, so you can use the beam to mark off rooms. After a certain amount of time, the robot sends out an RF signal to the lighthouse, and the LH lets it through into the next room. Repeat for 4 rooms if desired. Then the robot knows how to find its way back to where it started to plug itself back in to recharge. Cool.

Here are the problems with the lighthouse scheme: First, the beam gets wider very quickly. So there is a fan-shaped area in front of each lighthouse that never gets cleaned. In other words, when moving between the two rooms, the beam gets shut off but when cleaning either side, the robot will not enter the fan shaped area that the beam covers.

The second lighthouse problem is that the robot seems to use time rather than room size or complexity to decide when to move from one room to the other. In other words, for larger or more complex rooms, it simply does not cover the room before moving on to the next.

A non-lighthouse problem that you should know about with the 500 series is that I think they must be lower-slung than the 400 series. My 500 robot is not NEARLY as good is climbing up onto a rung as the 400. The 400 got stuck in fringe, but without fringe, it is nearly flawless. The 500 tends to push the rug around, bunch it up, and even get caught if it bunches up the rug in a corner that it has not way to get out of without getting back over the rug.

You MUST be sure there are no cords on the floor. For example, a floor lamp, a computer power cord, etc. My robot has gotten caught when I forget, and nearly pulled down a few items with dangling cords.

And finally, I have one room with hardwood floor and a rug about 6 or 8 inches smaller than one dimension of the room. So there is a 6+ inch "valley" between the rug and the wall. The 500 series does not clean the 6+ inch valley well at all. It goes along it, but does not pick up dirt well. I think it is probably that the brush is on the rug on one side and on the floor on the other, but is touching nothing in the middle. I end up taking a dry mop and going along the valley and pulling dirt out into an open area where the robot can get it.

Given all that, though, the robot saves a LOT of work. If there is something special happening, I would probably bring out the hand vac and get all the little corners and fans and valleys that the Roomba does not reach, but for every-day/week vacuuming, it is way easier than doing it by hand despite its problems.

Update 3/24/2009: I've had two problems, both fixed/replaced under warranty. First, it refused to dock. It would nose up to the dock and keep pushing and pushing; then finally back up and try again. Repeat forever. Used email support (I think). After doing a bunch of tests that they requested, they sent me a new dock. All ok now.

Second, the robot started spinning in circles. Even if I used the remote to try to make it go straight, it would turn. Sounds like a drive motor on one wheel died or something. In any case, I think I phoned this time. After a bunch of tests, they had me return the robot (minus dust bin and top insert) and they replaced it.

Now it works well, and guess what? The new robot can get up on rugs much better than the old one. I don't know if there was a hardware or software change, or if my old one was defective in some subtle way that I did not know about. I guess I might give this new unit an extra star if I could.

Interestingly, my 400-series also had to be replaced once, but it has worked fine ever since. I hope that will be the case with this one as well.

Have had it for a month now and I use it several times a week, almost every day. 5 people, 2 cats and 6 dogs make a lot of dirt! Roomba handles it well.

* can vacuum daily, without really doing it!
* does a pretty good job. much better than me doing it myself, which i would only find time for once a week
* docks itself successfully most of the time
* stops and tells me verbally to clean it's brushes if they are full of pet hair
* lighthouses are a great feature
* sometimes it gets lost and needs help finding it's dock. i put this under "like" cuz i think it's cute

Dislikes...
* it's supposed to slow down prior to bumping into things. it does this sometimes, but for wide, solid objects only, like walls. it runs full-speed into table legs and other thin objects. half the time it runs into the wall at full speed too
* it's making a black line where it rubs on my baseboards. i put a row of felt furniture feet across the front. this solved the problem, and also helped with the full speed collisions (though it looks stupid).

Worth Mentioning...
* have to Roomba-proof prior to vacuuming. a very small sacrifice to having the bulk of the work done for me
* small dirt canister. but the brushes always need to be cleaned when it's full anyway, so if i have to pick it up to clean the brushes, might as well dump the canister
* you'll get your fingers dirty and a little greasy cleaning the brushes, so not a good option for germaphobes
* gotta take a regular vacuum cleaner to the rugs once a week or two. and i use a hand vac for the corners and behind objects as needed, every couple of weeks
* got mine at a "popular warehouse store" for fifty bucks less, where i can also return it at any time, even a year or more, if it starts to crap out on me


TOTALLY worth it. Would recommend it to anyone. Only gave it 4 stars because there are improvements to be made, but it's AWESOME. However, you will be disappointed if you think it's zero maintenance. It makes your life easier. But it doesn't think for itself or clean itself so it needs a little help and maintenance. Also makes a good pet. I call mine Sally.

Yes, there are fewer arms on this sidebrush than on the ones that came with the Roomba, so if that is important to you, as it was to one reviewer here, then by all means, this is not the sidebrush for you. If, however, you want a sidebrush that does not fall apart and throw an arm every week or so, then definitely, order these replacements. My wife and I have 400 series and 500 series Roomba's which we love. They work great and have been very reliable for years and I believe that is partially due to keeping them clean. After every use my wife takes them apart and blows out all the parts with an air hose. We bought these kits so that she can just put clean replacement parts back in and wash the dirty parts later. This may seem like overkill but it works for us.

The whole point in buying a Roomba is to save time. Any time you save is quickly lost by the amount of time spent cleaning the brushes or walking around the house to see where the Roomba stopped due to the battery running out without even making an attempt to dock with the charger. The Roomba doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern when cleaning. During every cycle, it will go over one area multiple times while completely ignoring other areas. I also find that the Roomba is just tall enough to get stuck under our sectional and the dresser in the bedroom. In fact, just today I had to free the trapped Roomba from the exact same spot three times.

The actual vacuuming that it does do is fairly ineffective on anything other than hair or loose surface dirt. For a good, deep vacuum you'll still have to break out your upright.

I'm a robot-loving nerd but the Roomba just doesn't do it for me. The idea is years ahead of the technology required to do the job effectively.

I gave this product 4 stars because it's effective and fun, but doesn't completely meet my expectations (like returning to the docking station and needing to be plugged in 24/7) but it's close. I've used this for a couple of weeks so I'm still wary of it's lifespan as other reviewers mentioned. I suppose purchasing it from BedBath & Beyond would make a return easier.

I have a house with two XL cats. I really dislike the loud sound of a traditional vacuum and needing to attach a hose to get anywhere near corners or under furniture. This unit's noise is very tolerable and cleans places I never have. The cats aren't afraid of it either.

I section off a room at a time and then go do something else. I wouldn't run this while out unless the room really has no hazards for the robot like something to get wedged under. I dump the bin and filter fluff into the trash after each room. I don't run it in every room, every single day. I think that's a little psycho. The clean floors have made me want to mop them with the swiffer wetjet I also hadn't used in many months.Very nice results.

This vacuuming has really cut down the amount of swirling hair balls and floating hairs in the house - fewer eye irritations and allergy symptoms like my husband used to get when he would clean something around the house. I got the kit from HSN with two towers that I've needed to block off the oddly designed old house that I live in. Transitions onto area rug easily.

Got the 532 two days ago and we thought it was a miracle since it works great in our 3 dog house hold. But today, it starts to act up and require cleaning of the cliff sensors. However after cleaning the sensors per instruction in user manual, the unit still goes backwards a few steps then stop and give same error again. So, this is going back. I do like the idea and the product and I am hoping I just got a bad unit by luck. Maybe I will wait a little bit longer before try another one.

I received a "Rootooth" adapter as a Christmas present so I bought this book to expand on hacking Roomba. It is very detailed and easy to follow. The book assumes that you have some basic programming knowledge (i.e. MS VB, MS C#, MS C++, Java)to get the most out of it. You need to know how to compile and execute Java code to do the experiments in this book. It has some cool experiments and a lot of references to downloads for any utlities you will need to hack Roomba. I would highly recommend "Hacking Roomba" as a must have.

The Roomba 610 Professional is simply superb. Roomba represents a very effective, fascinating and sophisticated technology. And, yes, it is worth six hundred bucks, definitely. Our home has NEVER had floors so clean. It doesn't get any better than this. I know Consumer Reports didn't think much of the Roomba in their last report. But I don't think they have tested the recent models with the new software and operational improvements.

Roomba is not a gimmick nor a novelty. I think when these type devices came out, they were. But, this thing is as helpful as a cell phone with true utility. Roomba cleans in a manner and with a thoroughness that would be virtually impossible for a human to do. (Under furniture, along walls etc.) It can keep up with the mess, definitely.

As many have said of the Roombas, they do require very simple maintenance with every cleaning cycle. This perceived high maintenance may be annoying to some. But really, a seven year old could do it. Doing the maintenance is one heck of a lot easier than doing the whole job of vacuuming yourself. The tools that come with the Roomba make this job virtually painless. But, yes, you will get dust, dirt and hair on your hands. (Sorry, ladies). There is just no getting around that. Roomba goes places a regular vacuum cleaner can't and it is extremely thorough. Keep that in mind.

Several important tips I have learned that I would like to share: First, you want to keep the brushes, axles, and wheels clean. This is imperative. If not, Roomba gets choked with hair and dust. Doing this takes one to two minutes, tops. Second, you want to run Roomba every day or two so that she can clean a little at a time instead of having to overwork and get choked. Third, using a can of compressed air (like the kind you use to clean computer keyboards) will be beneficial in maintaining Roomba. Use the can of air to blast the innards clean of dust and dirt. I would buy several cans via a warehouse club or amazon. Keeping the motor clean would have to help it last longer too because the motor won't overheat as easily. Finally, you want to make sure you are using the "lighthouses" correctly. IE: setting the lighthouses in areas you want cleaned sequentially. You can also use the light house to create a virtual wall to keep roomba out of areas you don't want cleaned. Placing the light houses in the room to room "path" is very helpful. Then, in the last room you want cleaned, you place the base station. That way, Roomba can go to the base and charge herself when she is done with the rooms.

Others have said that Roomba is a bit loud. While she is louder on tile, I don't think that overall she is loud. I would estimate the noise is equivalent to a clothes dryer or a kitchen exhaust fan (higher in pitch, however). Roomba is definitely a fraction as loud as a traditional vacuum cleaner. The sound rating is about 75 decibels which approximates an bathroom exhaust fan. Silence may be golden but clean is better. You can run roomba while you are gone so this won't be a factor, if you wish.

What will it do? Roomba will effectively clean the areas that it is possible for it to get access to (within the limits of her battery and dirt capacity). This includes under at least some furniture as limited by clearances. And YES, it cleans edges too. If you have oriental rugs that are 6-8 inches away from a wall or obstacle, obviously, Roomba can't get there to clean. (The in-between area).

Roomba generally does not get hung up on cords (though smaller diameter cords-such as thin Apple laptop power adapters seem to snag it sometimes). It also does not get hung up on fringes of oriental rugs. Surprisingly, the Roomba rarely gets stuck. It negotiates around cords and under furniture with varying clearances with surprising ease. It reverses and varies it's trajectory to prevent getting hung. She even lifts herself up a little to get in nooks and crannies. Hearing the motor rev and seeing it change direction in response to varying dirt levels, room dimensions and watching it utilize it's own internal logic is nothing short of flat "WOW, MAN!!!".

Roomba cleans a room in an "ADD" fashion, circling, "crevicing" and crisscrossing in a logic only it seems to understand. But, the result is a clean room (or rooms). The speed depends on the size of the room, how dirty it is and how many obstacles it must negotiate through/around. This generally takes about 25 minutes for each room. It cleans the edges, it cleans carpet, it cleans hardwood floors and it cleans tile. It collects an amazing amount of dirt that even professionals would/do miss. I would say that if you ran Roomba every day, you should rarely need to vacuum. I have three dogs (including a dalmatian that sheds very heavily). Initially, the Roomba may become clogged because it will be cleaning under furniture with vast amounts of dirt/hair. But, with successive cleanings, Roomba will work better.

What won't it do? Sorry, it won't clean stairs. It won't clean behind doors unless they are closed. It can't get to areas where it won't fit such as around door stops. Also, don't expect for Roomba to clean 5000 square feet in one day on a single battery charge. If you have a home of that size as I do, you will need to purchase a couple roombas. Unless, of course, you move Roomba around and let her charge up between cleanings. Too, she is not going to clean a badly neglected floor without getting "choked". The Roomba is meant to do everyday, basic cleaning for about 2 hours at a time.

In short, don't waste any more time hesitating about this purchase. Buy one. You won't be disappointed. Although you will have to perform simple maintenance, you WON'T be vacuuming, bending, stooping and fooling with a damn vacuum cleaner (or paying someone else to do it) Good luck!

I got the professional series because I have a family of professional grade mess makers (kids, husband, pets, etc.). I love it! I think when people are dissatisfied with it they do not understand what it is and what it is not. It won't clean up an already neglected floor. You start with clean floors and then push a button everyday and let it run around your house doing upkeep and you won't have to vacuum anything except for behind items it can't get to once a month or so. Before my roomba I vacuumed 2 times a week and still dirt would show up on the bottom of peoples white socks. Since roomba no more dirt!!! It handles the cat fur and it even found an earring I lost over a year ago that must of been hiding someplace. The best part is it can get under things my vacuum never could reach. Yes, you have to know its limitations. It is a programmed device. You have to change something's around your home to work with it. Get wires off the floor so it won't get stuck, for instance. But this thing makes the floors shine and the rugs a joy to walk on. In fact I am purchasing another one for upstairs this week.

It has failed to say the least, dog hair makes its way into the gears and it cannot run unless you clean them. And that requires removing 13 screws. I have been very pleased with the iRobot Roomba 530. It works better than my little upright. We have 3 cats in our house and it does a great job of picking up their hair. Only a few drawbacks I've noticed:

-sometimes dark borders on rugs seem to confuse it.
-2 virtual walls would really be better than 1.
-small dust bin needs to be emptied after each room.
-sometimes the "extra dirty" sensor gets, well, extra dirty so the robot thinks it needs to constantly spot clean. But that's probably just my gross floors. Removing excess dust from the sensor fixes this.

These aside, I am very happy with this product and would definitely recommend it. It saves time and allows me to multitask, and most certainly cleans under places I normally wouldn't get to. And quite frankly, its kind of cute. The biggest problem is that I find myself watching it instead of doing other chores, haha!
